Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has found himself on the receiving end following his injury time volley against Serbia in Sunday’s World Cup qualifier.
Lille midfielder Renato Sanches fired Portugal into the lead in the second minute at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon.
Portugal headed into the match requiring just a single point to progress and the lead gave them even even more much needed confidence. However, Serbia mounted a stunning comeback against them.
Dusan Tadic cancelled out Sanches’ opener in the 33rd minute before the Serbia captain set up Aleksandar Mitrovic for his side’s second in the 90th minute.
minutes later, Ronaldo was picked out near the edge of the box in the 92nd minute from a Joao Cancelo cross.
The Manchester United superstar chested the ball, spun on the spot before pulling the trigger on a poorly executed volley and firing the ball into the stands.
Fans took to social media and blasted Ronaldo for ‘ruining the entire play’ and suggested he “wants to be the hero so bad.
“He literally ruined the entire play before it started just for a chance to take off his shirt,” one fan posted.Another Twitter user wrote: “I have no idea what he did that, he literally ruined the chance of equalising.”
