David De Gea could make shock Premier League return amid Andre Onana struggles

David De Gea could make a surprise Premier League return months after leaving Manchester United, it has been claimed.

According to the Mail, Newcastle are considering their options, including a possible move for free agent De Gea, as they await the results of scans on Nick Pope’s shoulder injury.

Pope was forced off late on in Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Manchester United on Saturday, suffering a repeat of the dislocated shoulder problem he endured while at Burnley.

The shot-stopper is facing a lengthy spell out, with the publication claiming an operation is considered the most likely course of action at present amid an expected absence of around four months.

The last time Pope suffered the same injury, he was out for five months between July 2018 and January 2019.

While Newcastle are reportedly hopeful De Gea’s recovery time will not be quite as long, the are already said to be looking at alternatives to the England international in the January transfer window.

Mail Sport have claimed De Gea is one potential option Newcastle have looked at.

The Spaniard, who was the recipient of last season’s Golden Glove, left United in the summer after 12 years at Old Trafford.

He has been a free agent ever since, but been tentatively linked to a United return as his replacement Andre Onana continues to struggle with the pressure of the No.1 shirt.

Though De Gea was believed to be on £375,000-per-week during his final contract at United, he would likely have to accept lower to fit in with their wage structure on Tyneside.

Former Newcastle No.1 Martin Dubravka came on to replace Pope against United, where he spent a brief time on loan last season.

Dubravka helped Newcastle preserve their 1-0 lead and pile further pressure on Erik Ten Hag’s side.

Newcastle also have former Liverpool goalie Loris Karius among the ranks.
