Police officers from Kerina Police Station in Kisii were compelled to defend themselves on Saturday after a suspect they were pursuing stabbed one of them in the face.
According to reports, the suspect was being chased by two police officers when he locked himself in a house in the Nyatoima area in Kisii South Sub-County.
With no other alternative, two officers forcefully entered the house to effect an arrest, only for the suspect to grab a knife and assault and stab one of the cops four times in the face.
The arresting officer, who had managed to handcuff only one of the suspect’s hands, was compelled to open fire in order to protect his life.

Subsequently, the two police officers rushed the suspect to hospital; however, he succumbed to the gunshot wounds he had incurred.
Police commenced an investigation into the case after transporting the body to a nearby morgue pending autopsy.
Meanwhile, the injured police officer was also swiftly transported to Iyabe Sub-County Hospital for immediate first aid treatment and admission.
Doctors at the medical facility stitched his wounds and transferred him to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for further medical attention after it was established that he was no longer in danger.
Nonetheless, medical practitioners at the referral hospital ordered him to be scanned to ascertain the severity of the knife injuries, as blood was oozing from his ears and nose.
Police commenced an investigation into the case and also transported the body of the shot suspect to a nearby morgue pending autopsy.
The body of the suspect was moved to a mortuary at the same facility.
According to Section 103 (a) of the National Police Service Act No. 11 (A) of 2011, offences related to assault of police can attract a fine not exceeding 1 million shillings, imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years, or to both.
